Oprah

I don't hate Oprah. Really, I don't.
But.

Her book club. I'm not so sure about it. It started off innocently enough, exposing middle aged housewives to reading books that maybe they wouldn't otherwise be exposed to. Got people interested in book clubs, book groups, discussing what they read and what it might mean. Cool.

However.

It resulted in this tidal wave for publishers trying to get their books on her list. The seal of "Oprah's book club," was golden for anyone trying to make a name for themselves, sell a lot of books, consequently make a lot of money. Cool. Well. The subject matter got a little predictable, and in a move to help out some of the classics, she changed her book club to include classics. OK, so, out come the classics. Steinbeck, etc. Woo hoo, they're dead, but they're selling a lot of books.

I happened to see a site the other day which listed A Million Little Pieces by James Frye.

My point. Well, it's miniscule, but I read that book a year ago and raved about it. See!!

My point? Well. OK, it's a shallow one, but I think most people who watch Oprah and read the books she recommends won't have a clue about the reality of this book. The seriousness of this book. I wonder what Mr. Frye's reaction will be.

His reaction probably involves rolling in huge piles of money. Naked. Oprah has that effect on people. I saw the show where she intorduced it at my friend's house. His mom was there and she was crying and he was on the phone and it was all so cute. In a "i just threw up in my mouth a little" way.
